What is an administrative license suspension?

An administrative license suspension (ALS) is a type of automatic punishment applied to drivers in the state of Indiana who have been arrested for driving under the influence (DUI). The ALS system is a way for Indiana to suspend a person’s license after a DUI arrest without having to wait for the outcome of a criminal trial. After a DUI arrest, the arresting officer will typically take the driver’s license and provide them with a temporary paper license that is valid for 30 days. This temporary license serves as a notice that the driver’s license is suspended and that the driver must take action within the 30-day period in order to avoid the ALS taking effect. If the driver does not take action within the 30-day window, their license will be automatically suspended for either 90 days or 180 days, depending on the circumstances. During this suspension, the driver will not be able to operate a motor vehicle upon Indiana roads. After the suspension period has ended, the driver may be able to have their license reinstated. However, they must satisfy all applicable requirements, such as completing an alcohol or drug treatment program, in order to do so.
