What are the different types of DUI charges?

In California, there are several types of DUI charges a person may face. The most common type is driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol. This offense occurs when a person operates a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.08 percent or higher. A person may also face a DUI charge for driving under the influence of drugs, including prescription and illegal drugs. Another type of DUI charge a person may face is driving with a suspended license due to a prior DUI conviction. This type of charge is considered a “wobbler” offense, meaning it can be either a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on the severity of the offense. Finally, a person may be convicted of aggravated DUI, which occurs when a person operates a motor vehicle with a BAC of 0.15 percent or higher, or when a person is convicted of DUI while transporting a minor. This type of DUI charge is always a felony and can result in harsher penalties than the standard DUI charge. In addition to the different types of DUI charges, there are also various penalties that may be imposed, ranging from fines and jail time to loss of driving privileges and probation. It is important to remember that a DUI conviction will not only affect a person’s driving privileges, but may also have far-reaching consequences in regards to employment, education, and even future housing opportunities.
