Can I expunge my record for a DUI conviction?

In Minnesota, it is possible to expunge a conviction for Driving Under the Influence (DUI). An expungement is a process that seals your criminal record and makes it so the general public cannot access it. To qualify for an expungement, you must meet specific criteria, such as not having any other convictions on your record, not having been convicted of a felony, and having been free of trouble for at least three years after the conviction. You should start the process by verifying with the Minnesota courts that you qualify for an expungement. If you do, you will need to file a petition to the court where you were convicted of DUI. The court will review your petition and determine if expungement is a reasonable option. The court may choose to hold a hearing to determine whether or not the expungement should be granted. If you are granted an expungement, the DUI will still appear on your criminal background check but will be marked as expunged. Your DUI conviction will not appear in public records or in records available to employers or landlords. Note that expungement is not available in every state. You should check with an attorney in the state where you were convicted to determine if it is an available option.
