What is a chemical test for a DUI?
A chemical test for a DUI is used to measure the amount of alcohol and/or other drugs in someone’s body. In Washington, there are two types of DUI chemical tests that can be used; a breath test and a blood test. A breath test is the most common type of test and it is done by having the suspect blow into a machine (or Breathalyzer). This machine can measure the amount of alcohol in the person’s breath and provide a numerical result. The other type of test is a blood test. This is done by having a sample of the suspect’s blood taken and sent to a laboratory for analysis. The lab can then measure the amount of alcohol and/or drugs in the blood sample and provide a numerical result. It is important to note that both test results are just estimations and the actual level of impairment may vary. Any test result above the legal limit in Washington (0.08 for an adult) is considered a DUI offense.
