What are the consequences for a DUI in the state of California?

In Maine, the consequences for a DUI (driving under the influence) depend on the severity of the offense and the individual circumstances. The first offense for a DUI is a Class D crime, which is punishable by as many as 364 days in prison and/or a fine of up to $2,000. Additionally, the driver’s license will be suspended for ninety days. Subsequent offenses will carry an increasing level of severity. For a second DUI offense, the crime is upgraded to a Class C felony, which could mean up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000. This offense also carries a minimum license suspension of two years or more. If a third DUI is committed, the seriousness of the offense increases to a Class B felony, with a potential sentence of up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000. In addition to the potential criminal penalties, Maine law also requires the installation of an ignition interlock device in the vehicles of people convicted of DUI. This device requires the driver to pass a breath test before the car will start. Finally, any person convicted of DUI in Maine must complete substance abuse treatment, as required by law. This can range from a few educational classes to more intensive residential treatment. In summary, a DUI in Maine can result in jail time, fines, license suspension, and, ultimately, a long-term commitment to substance abuse treatment.
