What type of license suspension is required for a conviction of a DUI?

A conviction of a DUI charge in Alaska will result in a license suspension. This is an administrative penalty that is imposed by the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). The length of the suspension will depend on the circumstances of the case. Generally, the suspension period for a first-time offender is 90 days. For subsequent offenses, the suspension period increases: 1 year for a second offense, 3 years for a third offense, and up to 5 years for a fourth or subsequent DUI offenses. In addition to a license suspension, other penalties may apply related to the DUI conviction. For example, all DUI convictions require a mandatory alcohol assessment, participation in a program of education and treatment, and up to one year in jail. A DUI conviction may also result in a fine of up to $10,000, depending on the circumstances. Moreover, any DUI-related suspension may have a lasting effect on an individual’s ability to drive. Once the suspension period is completed, a person may be required to submit proof of financial responsibility form, also known as an SR-22, to the DMV. This form is proof of valid auto insurance and must be kept on file for 3 years. Failure to maintain SR-22 coverage can result in a reinstatement of the suspension until proof of insurance is obtained.
