What is an alcohol assessment and evaluation?

An alcohol assessment and evaluation is a professional assessment tool used to determine the severity of someone’s alcohol-related behavior and the risk posed to themselves and/or society. In Pennsylvania, a DUI (Driving Under the Influence) charge may require an offender to complete an alcohol assessment and evaluation if the offense is serious enough. This assessment and evaluation are conducted by a certified alcohol and drug counselor who uses standardized testing and assessment tools to determine the risk level of the offender. The counselor will ask questions about the offender’s alcohol consumption, previous DUI charges, and other alcohol-related incidents, and will also look at the offender’s personal history and any other related information. Based on the results of the assessment and evaluation, the counselor will then recommend the appropriate treatment plan for the offender. This could include counseling, educational classes, enrollment in a designated driving program, or participation in a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. Once the offender has completed the recommended treatment program, he or she will then be required to appear in court in order to receive a sentence.
