What is an ignition interlock violation?

An ignition interlock violation is when a driver uses a vehicle with an ignition interlock device (IID) installed but fails to complete the tests required for the device. In Arizona, all drivers convicted of a DUI must install and use an IID for a period of time. The IID requires the driver to complete a breathalyzer test each time the car is started. If the driver’s blood-alcohol concentration (BAC) is over the pre-determined limit, the car will not start. If the driver fails to complete this test, or attempts to avoid the test, the state of Arizona considers it an ignition interlock violation. A second ignition interlock violation is when a driver attempts to manipulate the IID or cheat the test by using an alternate source of air or by attempting to start the car without the device, or by having someone else blow into the device. A third violation includes a BAC result of .04 or higher. The consequences of an ignition interlock violation can be serious, depending on the number of times the driver has been convicted. Upon the first offense, the driver may be subject to fines, jail time, and longer lengths of interlock device use. Subsequent violations can lead to the suspension or revocation of the offender’s license and the installation of an ignition interlock device for an increased amount of time.
