What is DWI law?

DWI law (driving while intoxicated) refers to laws in the state of Washington that make it illegal for a person to operate a motor vehicle when under the influence of drugs, alcohol, or any combination thereof. In Washington, a person can be charged with DWI if they have a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 or higher, or have a BAC of 0.05 or higher if they are younger than 21 years old. If a person is arrested for DWI in Washington, the laws provide for certain punishments that the person may face. Depending on the BAC level and whether or not it is the person’s first offense, punishments may range from a monetary fine, to license suspension or revocation, to jail time. It is important to note that the law also allows for certain enhanced punishments for certain offenders, such as those who are operating with a BAC of 0.15 or higher or who are operating a motor vehicle with a minor passenger in the vehicle. DWI laws in Washington are taken very seriously and the penalties, if convicted, can be quite severe. If you or someone you know is charged with DWI, it is important to seek the advice of an experienced attorney who can help you understand all of your legal rights and options.
