How long will my license be suspended for a DWI conviction?

If you are convicted of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) in California, your license will be suspended for a minimum of six months. Depending on prior offenses, the suspension period may be up to 10 years. For a first conviction, you will have your license suspended for at least 6 months, but you may be eligible for a restricted license after 30 days of suspension. To be eligible for a restricted license, you must complete a first offender program and a DUI school program, both of which will incur court costs. For a second conviction within 10 years of the first, your license will be suspended for two years, and you will not be eligible for a restricted license. You may be able to get your license reinstated if you complete a driving-under-the-influence (DUI) program approved by the court. For a third conviction within 10 years of the first two, your license will be suspended for three years, and you will not be eligible for a restricted license. You may be able to get your license reinstated if you complete a DUI program approved by the court. In addition to these license suspension periods, for all convictions you will also most likely have to pay substantial fines and fees, and you may receive jail time depending on the severity of the offense. It is important to note that a conviction on your record has the potential to affect more than just your driving privileges. Ultimately, it is best to avoid any criminal activity involving DWI.
