Are there any alternatives to having a suspended license if convicted of a DWI?

If you are convicted of a DWI in Texas, it’s likely that you will have your license suspended. Fortunately, however, you may be eligible for an Occupational Driver License (ODL), which would allow you to drive for specific purposes despite your license suspension. To qualify for an ODL, you must provide proof of financial responsibility (such as insurance) and pay a fee to the Department of Public Safety. You would also need to submit a form completed by your employer or other person requiring you to drive, with a copy of their driver’s license, and provide a statement from them explaining why you need an ODL. An ODL is limited in scope, usually allowing you to only drive for certain purposes such as to and from work, school, medical appointments, probation, and/or court appearances. You will only be able to drive during certain hours and only in certain areas. If you violate the restrictions of your ODL, it will be suspended and you’ll have to reapply to get it back. If you don’t qualify for an ODL, you may be able to complete an alcohol education program and receive an Ignition Interlock Device (IID) restricted license. The IID requires you to blow into a device that tests whether you’ve been drinking before you are allowed to start your car. This license would allow you to drive to certain work-related activities and other necessary locations. You’ll also need to provide proof of insurance and pay a fee. No matter the scenario, it’s important to speak with a knowledgeable attorney to learn more about the laws in your area and to discuss the best options for your case.
