What is the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act?
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) is a federal law enacted in 2004 that provides all students in Oklahoma with the right to a free and appropriate education (FAPE). IDEIA is designed to ensure that students with disabilities have access to the same educational opportunities as their peers without disabilities. IDEIA provides students with disabilities in Oklahoma several protections. These protections include the right to an individualized education program (IEP) tailored to each student’s unique needs, access to the same extracurricular activities as their peers, and the right to transition smoothly from one school level to the next. IDEIA also mandates that every school district in Oklahoma provide appropriate educational services to qualified students with disabilities in the least restrictive environment. IDEIA is also important because it sets standards and procedures for evaluating children with disabilities. This includes identifying a child’s unique needs, placing a child in an appropriate educational setting, and evaluating a child’s progress. Furthermore, IDEIA helps ensure that any evaluation or assessment a child may receive is conducted in a manner that is fair and unbiased. IDEIA is a critical law in Oklahoma, as it provides important protections for students with disabilities and helps ensure that all students have equal access to an education. Through IDEIA, the state of Oklahoma strives to ensure that all students are provided with the resources and support they need to succeed.
