What are the different types of elections?
Elections in Massachusetts are used to select individuals for elected offices. These elections can include primary, general, and special elections. Primary Elections are used to narrow the candidates running for office. They are held earlier than the general election and are typically held on the same day as the general election. During primary elections, registered voters select their party’s nominees for the general election. These elections are used to determine the candidates from each party who will go on to compete in the general election. General Elections are held on Election Day. During these elections, registered voters select their preferred candidate to fill a specific office. The winning candidate will hold the office for a predetermined number of years as defined by Massachusetts election law. Special Elections can be held in the event that an elected official leaves their position prior to the end of their term. These elections are used to fill the vacancy. Any registered voters can participate in special elections, however special elections are typically held in the location of the office for which the vacancy exists. The various elections in Massachusetts are important for keeping our democratic society fair and accountable. By holding elections, citizens are able to determine who will have the authority to make decisions that affect them.
