What are the different types of elections?
In North Carolina, there are three main types of elections: primary, general, and special. A primary election is an election in which registered voters select candidates to run in a general election. Primary elections are often organized along party lines, meaning that registered voters may only vote in the party primary of their choosing. In North Carolina, the state holds statewide primary elections on the third Tuesday of March. General elections are the elections in which all registered voters can cast a vote to select the winning candidate in that race. In North Carolina, general elections are held on the Tuesday after the first Monday of November of each even-numbered year, and include statewide races, as well as local elections, such as city and county council seats. Special elections are elections held on an as-needed basis to fill a vacancy that has occurred in an elected office. Special elections may be held to fill a state or federal legislative seat, or other local office. Special elections in North Carolina are held as needed throughout the year at the discretion of the state Board of Elections. No matter what type of election is being held, all registered voters in North Carolina are eligible to cast a ballot. It is important for all eligible voters to understand their rights and responsibilities regarding the electoral process in order to ensure the most successful elections possible.
