What are the requirements to run for office in the United States?
In order to run for office in the United States, a person must meet certain requirements set forth by the United States Constitution. These requirements include being a natural born citizen, being at least 30 years old for a seat in the United States House of Representatives, and being at least 35 years old for a seat in the United States Senate. Additionally, the prospective candidate must have lived in the United States for a minimum of 14 years. In Minnesota specifically, the requirements to run for office depend on the type of office a person is seeking. For statewide offices such as Governor or State Senator, the candidate must be at least 21 years old, a Minnesota resident for at least one year, and a United States citizen. Additionally, in Minnesota, candidates are subject to the Minnesota Campaign Practices Act which requires that the candidate file a “Statement of Economic Interest” with the Minnesota Campaign Finance Board disclosing their economic interests in the state of Minnesota. Finally, the candidate must be eligible for the ballot through registering with the proper political party or as an independent candidate.
