What are voter ID laws?

Voter ID laws in Texas are state laws that require all voters to present a valid form of identification in order to cast their ballot. This includes driver’s license, state ID card, passport, military ID card, citizenship certificate, or an Election Identification Certificate (EIC). In Texas, the goal of the voter ID laws is to deter fraudulent voting. These laws require voters to bring a valid form of identification to the polls in order to prove their identity and ensure that they are registered to vote. The EIC is a free, government-issued document available to any registered voter in Texas who does not have any of the other forms of identification listed above. It is issued by the Texas Department of Public Safety and can be obtained at select county offices. Voter ID laws are important to protect the integrity of our electoral system. They ensure that only registered voters are able to cast their ballots and that those ballots are counted accurately. The State of Texas is committed to protecting every eligible voter’s right to participate in our democratic process.
