What are the rules regarding campaign finance disclosures?

In West Virginia, candidates running for office, or for nomination to office, are required to file a statement of their campaign finances with the West Virginia Secretary of State’s Office. This includes all receipts, disbursements, and debts associated with the campaign. Candidates must report all contributions, loans, and payments made in support of their campaigns. This includes any type of financial support, such as money, goods, and services. Candidates must submit a campaign finance report within 10 days of the election. If these reports are not submitted on time, the candidate will be required to pay a fine. Once the election is completed, candidates are required to file a final campaign finance disclosure. This disclosure needs to be filed within 30 days of the election. Candidates must also file a special report at the beginning of the election year. This report must include the candidate’s name, office sought, contact information, date of election, and the amount of money raised over the past four years for the particular office. It should also include a detailed breakdown of all contributions and expenditures associated with the campaign. Finally, candidates must also disclose all sources of income related to the campaign. This includes any business or personal income received related to the campaign, such as consulting fees, investments, or any other financial support. All these sources of income must be disclosed in the candidate’s campaign reports.
