What are the rules regarding political advertisements?

In North Carolina, election law regarding political advertisements is overseen by the State Board of Elections. Political advertisements are defined as any advertisement that expressly advocates for the election of a particular candidate and/or a "yes" or "no" vote on a referendum, initiative, or other ballot question. To ensure transparency of political advertisements, all political advertisements in North Carolina must include a printed disclaimer specifying who paid for the advertisement and who authorized it. The disclaimer must appear on printed materials, radio and television ads, and any other medium where political advertisements are run. Additionally, political advertisements for state-level candidates and ballot questions must include the contact information for the State Board of Elections so that people can file complaints if they believe that the advertisement is false or misleading. Special rules apply to political advertisements that are run on the internet, including those run on social media. Political ads that are run via search engine ads, such as Google Ads, must also include the contact information for the State Board of Elections. Finally, political advertisements must not contain any material that is false or misleading. If the advertisement does contain false or misleading information, the State Board of Elections has the authority to take action against those responsible for the advertisement.
