What is voter intimidation and how is it addressed?
Voter intimidation is a form of voter suppression, which is illegal in the state of Arkansas. It is when someone attempts to influence, scare, or prevent a person from voting. There are various forms of voter intimidation, such as threats of violence, physical blocking of polling places, and even false claims or rumors about the voting process. The state of Arkansas has several laws in place to protect voters from intimidation. Voter intimidation is a Class D Felony which carries up to a six-year prison sentence and/or a fine up to $10,000. It is also illegal for someone to pretend to be an election official and falsely provide voters with election information. In addition, Arkansas has an Election Fraud Hotline that voters can use to report any suspicious or illegal activities that may interfere with voting rights. The hotline is free and available 24/7. People are also encouraged to report any threats or intimidation they experience at the polls to the local police. Local poll workers have also been trained on how to identify and report voter intimidation. They are instructed to pay special attention to any suspicious activity or behavior that could be construed as intimidating and to respond accordingly. Finally, Arkansas has a variety of organizational resources such as the Secretary of State and the League of Women Voters that are available to help prevent and address voter intimidation. These organizations provide voter education to ensure that no one is ever denied their right to vote.
