What are the requirements for ballot access?

In Massachusetts, there are certain requirements that must be met in order to have your name on the ballot as a candidate for any elected office. The first requirement is that the person must be a qualified voter in the district or ward where they are running. They must also be registered as a member of the party whose nomination they are seeking. In addition, they must file a nomination paper, which consists of signatures of registered voters in their district who support their candidacy. Signature requirements vary depending on the office sought and the number of votes cast in the last election for that office. Candidates for President or Vice President of the United States must also submit a statement of candidacy to the Massachusetts Secretary of the Commonwealth. This statement must include the candidate’s name, address, and a state of qualifications, as well as the names of the elector-candidates chosen by the candidate. The state party organization will also need to submit a notice of candidate selection. In order to be certified as a candidate, the candidate must also pay a filing fee or submit a petition with a designated number of signatures from voters in the district. This number varies depending on the office sought. Finally, candidates may also need to provide evidence of their qualifications to the municipal clerk of the jurisdiction where the office is located. This can include a copy of their birth certificate, proof of their residency, and documentation of any other qualifications required by law.
