What is a “super Tuesday” primary election?
A “Super Tuesday” is a day during a presidential election year when a large number of states have their primary elections on the same day. The reason for having a Super Tuesday is to give candidates the chance to gain a clear advantage over their opponents by winning a large majority of primaries on a single day. In Washington, Super Tuesday is the third Tuesday in March. In order to determine who the official candidate will be, each political party runs its own primary election. During the primary election, each political party allows the registered voters in that state to cast their votes for the candidate they want to represent the party in the general election. The candidate who wins the majority of votes in each state is awarded all of that state’s delegates, who will then go on to the national convention and cast their votes for the party’s official candidate. Super Tuesdays are an important part of the election process because they provide a very efficient way to measure the support for each candidate at the same time across a large number of states. This helps candidates to quickly move ahead, or fall behind, in the race for the nomination.
