What is the difference between a primary and caucus?

The primary and caucus are two different ways that the political parties in Tennessee choose their candidates for the general election. A primary election is a type of election that is held in order to choose the party’s candidate for the general election. Primaries are usually held months before the general election and registered voters of each party can vote for which candidate they want to represent their party in the general election. A caucus is a type of meeting that is held by the political parties where only members of that party can participate. During the caucus, party members can nominate and choose their candidate for the general election. A caucus is usually not a secret ballot and is more of a discussion among party members. The main difference between a caucus and a primary is that a caucus is held by the political party and involves only members of that party, while a primary is held by the state and registered voters of each party can participate. In Tennessee, primary elections are held in August of even-numbered years and caucuses are held in either the winter or spring of even-numbered years.
