What are the rules for ballot access?

In Arkansas, candidates wishing to run for public office must meet certain ballot access requirements to gain access to the ballot. Generally, a candidate must file a Statement of Intent signed by the candidate with the Secretary of State no less than seventy-five days prior to the election. Additionally, the candidate must obtain a minimum of 10,000 valid signatures from registered voters in Arkansas in order to be placed on the ballot. In order to be considered a valid signature, all signatories must be registered voters in Arkansas, provide their name, address, and date of birth, and all the information must be filled out completely and accurately. Signatures must also be collected within a certain period of time, typically two weeks prior to the filing deadline. When a candidate has collected enough valid signatures, the candidate then must turn in the signatures, along with a filing fee, to the Secretary of State. The filing fee differs based on the office the candidate is running for. After this step is completed, the Secretary of State will verify the signatures and if all the requirements have been met, the candidate will be listed on the ballot. It is important that all candidates in Arkansas meet the requirements for ballot access to ensure fairness in the election process. By having clear, consistent ballot access rules, candidates are given the same opportunities to be elected and make sure that only qualified individuals end up on the ballot.
