What is “motor voter” registration?
In New Mexico and other states, “motor voter” registration is a way for people to register to vote when they get a driver’s license or state ID card. In 1993, the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) was passed to make it easier for people to register to vote in federal elections. It requires all states to provide opportunities for people to register to vote when they get driver’s licenses, state IDs, and other public assistance. This process is often called “motor voter” registration. When someone applies for a driver’s license or state ID card, they will be asked if they want to register to vote. If they say yes, they will be given a form to complete that registers them to vote. Once the form is completed, they will be added to the voter rolls. This process makes it easier for people to register to vote without having to find a voter registration office or complete paperwork. Motor voter registration is an important part of election law in New Mexico. The state wants to make it easier for citizens to register to vote and make sure that as many eligible voters as possible can exercise their right to vote. Motor voter registration helps New Mexicans to register to vote easily and efficiently.
