What are the rules regarding campaign finance limits?

In Virginia, there are limits to how much money a candidate can spend in their campaign for office. A candidate’s campaign committee may spend a maximum of $45,000 for races for Senate of Virginia, and $25,000 for races for House of Delegates. Any donations made to a candidate’s campaign must come from individuals, political action committees, or political party committees registered in Virginia. It is not legal for a candidate to receive any funds from corporations, unions, or other organizations. There is also a limit to the amount of money an individual can donate to a campaign. An individual can donate no more than $2,500 per election (primary and general elections are treated as separate elections). Political action committees (PACs) and political party committees are allowed to donate money to a candidate’s campaign, but they must abide by the following rules: PACs can donate up to $10,000 per election cycle, and political party committees can donate no more than $18,000 to any individual candidate per election cycle. These campaign finance limits apply to all candidates running in primary and general elections in Virginia. It is important that all candidates abide by these limits in order to ensure fair and honest elections.
