What is “voter fraud” and how is it addressed?

Voter fraud is the illegal act of manipulating a voting process to gain an unfair advantage. It can involve ballot box stuffing, bribery, double voting, illegal voting by non-citizens or dead people, or any other fraudulent activity. In California, voter fraud is addressed through a number of safeguards and procedures. The state regularly updates its voter registration rolls to ensure ineligible voters are not registered. California also has laws in place to protect against double voting and voting by non-citizens. Additionally, the state uses automated signature verification to ensure only registered voters are able to cast ballots. Furthermore, California has a ‘No Match, No Vote’ policy, which requires that the information on a voter’s registration and identification cards match before they can vote. This is an effort to provide security against voter fraud. Poll workers are also required to compare the signature on the voter’s ID card to the signature stored in the system. Finally, the California Department of Justice reviews all complaints related to voter fraud and investigates any suspected cases. In addition to civil penalties, criminal penalties can be imposed for any violations of election laws. Cases of fraud are taken very seriously, and those found guilty can be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.
