What is “voter fraud” and how is it addressed?
Voter fraud is the illegal act of interfering with, or attempting to influence, the outcome of an election. This could mean any form of illegal activity or manipulation that would prevent a person from registering to vote, voting, or having their vote counted. In Florida, voter fraud can take the form of intimidation, bribery, false registrations, multiple voting, or buying votes. The Florida Department of State Division of Elections works to protect the integrity of elections through active monitoring and prevention of fraud. Voter fraud can be addressed in a variety of ways, including through voter registration audits, which help to ensure that people are registered to vote, and that no one has registered more than once. Voting systems are also monitored to ensure that any irregular patterns are detected and flagged for additional investigation. In addition to these measures, voters are encouraged to report any suspicious activity. Florida also utilizes a statewide voter fraud hotline, where any person can report suspicious activity or irregularities. Additionally, the Florida Department of State Division of Elections provides an online registration form for those who wish to report fraud. Ultimately, Florida law enforcement takes any allegations of voter fraud seriously and investigates all reports. If someone is found guilty of voter fraud, they may face criminal charges, including fines, and possibly jail time.
