What is “voter fraud” and how is it addressed?
Voter fraud is a criminal offense where a person attempts to influence a voting process, either by casting an ineligible ballot or by improperly influencing another person’s vote. In North Dakota, voter fraud is addressed in the North Dakota Century Code, which outlines specific punishments for different types of voter fraud. For instance, it is illegal to give false information on any voter registration forms or to cast multiple ballots. Violations of these laws carry penalties of up to five years in prison and up to a $5,000 fine. Additionally, any person found guilty of voter fraud will face a permanent revocation of their voting rights in all future elections in North Dakota. Additionally, North Dakota requires all voters to provide valid government-issued identification such as a driver’s license or state ID card. This ensures that each voter is who they say they are and helps prevent fraud. The state also requires all poll workers to attend training so that they are aware of signs of voter fraud and are able to take appropriate steps to prevent it. They also check to make sure that none of the individuals who come to vote are on the list of convicted felons prohibited from voting.
