What are the rules regarding campaign finance reform?

In North Dakota, campaign finance reform is addressed by two state laws: the 2018 Campaign Finance Reform Initiative and the North Dakota Campaign Finance Disclosure Law. The 2018 Campaign Finance Reform Initiative stipulates that political contributions must be made through a political action committee (PAC). This PAC will collect, disclose, and report financial information about individuals or entities that contribute to the committee. Individuals and entities are limited in how much they can contribute to a PAC to prevent undue influence from any one donor. Also, PACs will have to disclose the names of their contributors, the amount of money donated, and the purpose of the donation. The North Dakota Campaign Finance Disclosure Law requires PACs to file reports during and after the election season. These reports must include all donations to and from the PAC. They must also include a description of the expenditure or donation, as well as the name, address, and occupation of the donor. In addition, candidates must provide reports of their expenditures and income statements. Ultimately, these laws are intended to advance the goal of transparency in political campaigns in North Dakota. This allows people to understand where and how money is being spent in political campaigns. With more transparency, North Dakotans can make more informed decisions when voting.
