What are the legal requirements for absentee voting?

In Colorado, absentee voting allows registered voters unable to make it to the polls on election day the ability to cast their ballots early. The Colorado law requires that to vote absentee all registered voters must complete an absentee ballot request form. These forms are available at the county clerk’s office. Requests must be received by the county clerk at least 8 days before the election. Forms can also be requested online or by mail. Once the request form is submitted, the county clerk will then send the voter an absentee ballot. The voter must complete and sign their absentee ballot envelope and submit it to the county clerk either by mail, fax, or in-person. The signature and date must be included. It should be noted that if the absentee ballot is to be mailed, it must be postmarked by the day before the election and received by 7 pm on Election Day. The county clerk will then verify that the voter is eligible to vote and that the signature on the envelope matches the signature in the voter registration database. If accepted, the absentee ballot will then be counted. Absentee voting may also be conducted electronically for overseas military voters. Military and overseas voters should contact their local county clerk to request a ballot and information regarding electronic voting. Therefore, in Colorado, the legal requirements for absentee voting include the submission of an absentee ballot request form at least 8 days before the election, completion and signing of the absentee ballot envelope, and verification of the voter’s eligibility.
