What is employment law?
Employment law is a set of laws, regulations, and standards that govern the relationship between employers and employees. In the state of Pennsylvania, employment law is generally governed by the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act (PHRA) and the Pennsylvania Minimum Wage Act. The PHRA protects employees from discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender, national origin, disability, age, and other protected categories. It also ensures that employers provide employees with a safe workplace free from harassment and abuse. The Pennsylvania Minimum Wage Act sets the minimum pay rate for employees, sets rules on overtime pay, and establishes standards for paid vacation, holidays, and other benefits. Employment law also encompasses other regulations, such as those that address equal pay, job security, and the right to form a union. These laws aim to give employees the assurance that they are being treated fairly and given the rights and protections they deserve, while also ensuring that employers can operate in a legal and ethical manner.
