What type of discrimination is unlawful?

Discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, physical or mental disability, religion, ancestry or national origin is unlawful in Maine. Additionally, Maine has a comprehensive anti-discrimination law that also makes it illegal to discriminate against an individual based on their age, marital status, genetic information, or military status. This law prohibits employers from treating individuals differently in terms of hiring, promotion, salary, benefits, layoffs, or termination based on these protected characteristics. The Maine Human Rights Act also prohibits workplace harassment and any type of discrimination related to employment decisions. Employers must provide equal access to all employment opportunities regardless of any of the protected characteristics listed above. As part of this act, employers must also ensure that all employees are provided with a workplace free from discrimination and harassment, and should have policies and procedures in place to ensure that this is maintained. Finally, Maine has a laws that prohibit employers from retaliating against employees who make claims of discrimination or have been involved in some form of discrimination filing or investigation. This includes any type of adverse employment action, such as termination, demotion, or reductions in pay or benefits. Employers must ensure that they are taking action to prevent discrimination and harassment in the workplace, and must investigate any reports of such behavior.
