What is energy law?
Energy law is a branch of law that covers the regulation, usage, and production of energy. In California, energy law is regulated by the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). The CPUC is a state agency that is responsible for regulating energy services, such as electric and natural gas, as well as telecommunications services. Energy law in California is divided into two main categories: electricity and natural gas. Electricity law covers the construction and operation of power plants, transmission lines, and related infrastructure; the retail sale of electricity to consumers; and rules governing the transmission of electricity across state lines. Natural gas law covers the production, storage, and transportation of natural gas, along with the sale and distribution of the gas to consumers. The CPUC establishes the rules, regulations, and laws that govern the energy industry. These rules and regulations are designed to ensure the safe and reliable delivery of energy services and to protect ratepayers. Also, state and federal laws and regulations related to electricity and natural gas also help to ensure the safety, reliability, and affordability of energy services. The CPUC also sets rates and enforces laws related to energy rates set by the state. These rates are in place to ensure that energy services are provided at a reasonable price and that ratepayers are protected from excessive energy bills. Additionally, the CPUC oversees the energy efficiency programs of energy providers, ensuring that customers are able to receive the benefits of energy efficient services.
