What is a distribution deal?

A distribution deal is an agreement between a producer and a distributor to make a movie or other type of entertainment available for public viewing. The distributor is responsible for getting the movie or other form of entertainment to the public, either through theatrical release or DVD, streaming services, and other digital formats. In a distribution deal, the producer gives the distributor the rights to duplicate, package, and market the product. In return, the distributor agrees to pay the producer a predetermined amount of money when the product is released and any additional amounts for sales that it generates. In Florida, a distribution deal must be approved by the state’s Department of Business and Professional Regulation, and certain paperwork must be filed in order for the deal to be legal and binding. The distributor must also be bonded by the state of Florida to pay royalties to the producer. Distribution deals are an important way for producers to make money in the entertainment industry and to get their work seen by the public.
