What is a publishing deal?

A publishing deal is a contract between a publisher and a songwriter or a musical artist. It gives the publisher the right to exploit a song, album, or other musical composition and receive royalties in exchange. This means the publisher has the exclusive right to license, produce, and distribute the musical composition. In West Virginia, a publishing deal must be written and agreed upon in order for it to be legally binding. A songwriter can enter into a publishing deal directly with a publisher, or a third-party entity can act as a middleman.
