What is a management agreement?

A management agreement is a legally binding contract between a talent manager and their client, such as an entertainer. This agreement outlines the job duties of the manager, the services they will provide, and the terms of payment. In the state of Washington, management agreements must be written and signed by both parties. A manager’s job duties can include representing the entertainer in negotiations with potential employers and sponsors, monitoring the entertainer’s career, managing finances and investments, and marketing the entertainer’s work. Managers may be compensated in a variety of ways, such as with a percent of the entertainer’s income, fees, and expenses. Management agreements typically last for a period of time specified in the contract. The agreement can be terminated by either the manager or the entertainer at any time. When this happens, the manager is generally entitled to a portion of the entertainer’s income earned during the time the agreement was in effect. The manager may also have the right to receive a portion of the entertainer’s income for a period of time after the agreement is terminated. In Washington, management agreements are regulated by the Washington Department of Licensing. Managers must be licensed in order to provide services to entertainers. It is important for managers and their clients to thoroughly understand the terms of the management agreement and make sure it is in compliance with local laws before signing.
