What is the Clean Water Act?

The Clean Water Act is a law passed in 1972 by the United States Congress in order to regulate the quality of the nation’s surface waters. It is designed to prevent any pollutants, such as oil, grease, and toxic chemicals, from entering the water supply and damaging the environment. The Clean Water Act is the most comprehensive federal law for protecting the environment in the United States. In New York, the Clean Water Act requires that all sources of pollution, from water treatment plants to industrial facilities, meet the standards set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency. All of these sources must be monitored and regulated to ensure that the water is clean and safe for human consumption. The Act also requires that any wastewater discharged into waters in New York must meet certain quality standards. The Clean Water Act also requires that all waters, such as lakes, rivers, and streams, be restored. This includes getting rid of any contaminants, improving wildlife habitats, and restoring natural features. In order to meet the requirements of the Clean Water Act, New York has established enforcement programs to ensure that all of its water sources are safe. These programs are managed by the Department of Environmental Conservation. They are responsible for monitoring and inspecting all water sources, issuing permits, and enforcing any violations of the law. Additionally, they are responsible for educating the public on the importance of clean water and the consequences of polluting it.
