How does environmental law protect endangered species?
Environmental law is an important tool for protecting endangered species in Florida. These laws not only protect the species from further threats, but also provide for their recovery and preservation. The Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA) is a federal law that is enforced to protect and recover species of plants and animals that are in danger of extinction nationwide. In Florida, the ESA has protected species such as the Florida panther, the manatee, and the bald eagle. The act prohibits anyone from “taking” (killing, harassing, or otherwise harm) a species that is listed as endangered or threatened. It also requires federal agencies to ensure that their actions, such as constructing roads or building dams, are free of direct or indirect effects that would harm the species or its habitat. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) also implements state regulations to protect species from being taken, harassed, or otherwise harmed. The agency is responsible for managing, protecting, and restoring Florida’s wildlife populations, which includes endangered species. The FWC also works to preserve habitat that is important to Florida’s species, and to educate citizens on how to coexist with wildlife. Ultimately, environmental law helps to ensure that species that are threatened with extinction can continue to live in Florida. By protecting species and their habitats, environmental law allows them to thrive and contribute to the state’s overall biodiversity.
