What is the Toxic Substances Control Act?

The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) is a federal environmental law in New York that was enacted in 1976. It is administered by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The purpose of TSCA is to regulate the manufacture, importation, processing, use, and disposal of certain chemicals and chemical substances that are considered hazardous or potentially hazardous. This law also limits the amount of hazardous substances that may be released into the environment. Additionally, it requires companies to report the use of hazardous substances to the EPA. The law is intended to protect public health and the environment from potential exposure to hazardous chemicals. It requires companies to provide data on the toxicity and other hazards of their products and to keep records to track the amount of hazardous substances that are used, manufactured, or disposed of. Companies must also detail measures taken to prevent or limit exposure to hazardous substances. The law also requires companies to take measures to reduce the amount of pollutants emitted into the environment from their activities. This includes installing pollution-control equipment and implementing other measures to reduce air or water pollution. Companies must also comply with national health and safety standards. The TSCA is enforced by the EPA and companies must take corrective action if they are found to be in violation of the law. Penalties for violating the TSCA include fines, injunctions, and criminal sanctions. The EPA also has the power to force companies that violate the law to recall their products or take other corrective actions.
