What is the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act?

The Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) is a law that was passed in 1947 by the United States Congress. This law regulates the sale and distribution of pesticide products in the United States. It sets standards for how manufacturers must produce and label pesticides, and how they can be safely used. It also requires registration of all pesticide products before they can be sold in the United States. In Vermont, FIFRA requires that pesticides be applied in a way that prevents harm to humans, animals, and the environment. It also states that pest control products must be properly labeled with safety instructions, and that they must be used according to those instructions. In addition, FIFRA prohibits the sale of any pesticide that is misbranded or falsely advertised. FIFRA is managed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and its implementation is enforced by the Vermont Department of Environmental Conservation. The Vermont Agency of Agriculture, Foods and Markets is also involved in the process of registration and regulation of pest control products. FIFRA is important for Vermont because it helps to ensure that pest control products are safe and effective when used as directed, as well as protecting the state’s environment. This in turn helps protect the health of the people and animals living in Vermont. Without strict regulations on the sale and use of pesticides, Vermont’s environment and its inhabitants would be at greater risk from dangerous chemicals.
