What is the Clean Power Plan?
The Clean Power Plan is a set of environmental standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that applies to all states, including Arizona. The plan requires states to reduce their emissions of carbon dioxide and other pollutants from their power plants. The Clean Power Plan also sets specific targets for each state to meet to reduce their emissions by a certain percentage by a certain year. In Arizona, these standards are set to reduce emissions from power plants by 22 percent by 2030. This will require all power plants to be outfitted with modern pollution control technologies, such as scrubbers and catalytic converters. It will also mean that Arizona will have to invest in more renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, and geothermal, to replace and reduce existing emissions from power plants in the state. Arizona is currently taking steps to meet the Clean Power Plan’s standards. It has implemented the Arizona Renewable Energy Requirements that require electric providers to generate 25 percent of their electricity from renewable energy sources by 2025. It is also looking into ways to reduce energy consumption, such as through energy efficiency programs and demand response programs. By ensuring that Arizona meets the Clean Power Plan’s environmental standards, the state will be helping to reduce air pollution, improve public health, and protect its environment. This will go a long way towards making Arizona a healthier and greener state for its citizens.
