What is the Clean Power Plan?

The Clean Power Plan is a policy implemented by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from power plants in North Carolina and throughout the United States. This plan was created in 2014 to reduce these emissions from power plants by 32% in the year 2030. This plan is one of the most concrete steps taken by the United States to reduce its carbon footprint. The Clean Power Plan puts limits on the amount of carbon dioxide that power plants can emit. These limits are set for each state based on the state’s unique energy mix. States are then given a target to reduce emissions from existing power plants by a certain percentage. To achieve these emissions reductions, each state must create an implementation plan. This plan must include measures to reduce overall emissions, such as improving efficiency and switching to cleaner energy sources. In North Carolina, the implementation plan includes steps to increase renewable energy production and improve energy efficiency. Public utility companies must increase their use of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind, to 15.5% of their energy portfolio by 2021. The state is also implementing energy efficiency initiatives, such as helping households to conserve energy and provide incentives for energy efficiency improvements. Overall, the Clean Power Plan is an important step in reducing emissions from power plants in North Carolina and across the United States. This plan demonstrates the commitment of the United States in the fight against climate change and serves as a model for other states to follow.
