What is the Coastal Zone Management Act?

The Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA) is a federal law passed in 1972 that was designed to protect and manage the coastal resources of the United States. In North Carolina, the CZMA is administered by the Coastal Resources Commission (CRC). The CZMA provides for the establishment of coastal management programs that are designed to ensure that development and human uses of coastal areas are balanced with the protection of natural resources. The CZMA requires each coastal state to develop a coastal management program that meets certain federal standards. The program must protect coastal resources, promote public access and recreational opportunities, and promote wise use of coastal resources. The state must also provide for public participation in the development of the program. In North Carolina, the CRC is responsible for development, implementation, and monitoring of the Coastal Management Program. The CRC works closely with local governments, non-profit organizations, and other stakeholders to ensure that the program meets the needs of coastal communities. The program includes regulations that govern the use and development of coastal resources. The CZMA also provides funding for coastal resource management and protection programs. This funding is used to support research, conservation, and education programs that help protect and manage coastal resources. Additionally, CZMA funding is used for the development and implementation of local coastal management programs. North Carolina has received more than $56 million in CZMA funding since it adopted the program in 1974.
