What is the Clean Air Act?
The Clean Air Act is a federal law that was passed in 1970 to help protect air quality and the environment. The Clean Air Act is enforced in Pennsylvania by the state’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). It sets limits on the amount of certain pollutants that businesses and industries can release into the air. The Clean Air Act also requires certain businesses and industries to install and maintain pollution control equipment to reduce emissions of these pollutants. The Clean Air Act established two primary goals: protecting public health and protecting the environment. It mandated the setting of National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS), which are intended to ensure that air quality meets the health standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). In Pennsylvania, the Bureau of Air Quality, a division of the DEP, is responsible for setting limits on pollutants, such as carbon monoxide and ozone, which can be harmful to people’s health and the environment. The Clean Air Act also regulates the emission of hazardous air pollutants, such as lead and asbestos. In Pennsylvania, the Bureau of Air Quality, working with both federal and state regulations, has set limits on the amount of these pollutants that can be released into the air. BAAQ programs also work to reduce the amount of pollutants emitted from automobiles and other mobile sources. Overall, the Clean Air Act is an important law for protecting the public health and the environment in Pennsylvania. It sets limits on the amount of harmful pollutants that can be released into the air and requires certain businesses and industries to install and maintain pollution control equipment. By enforcing these regulations, the state of Pennsylvania is able to ensure the quality of its air.
