What is the Environmental Justice Movement?

The Environmental Justice Movement is an international call for justice and equity in the face of environmental inequality. It was first recognized in the United States in the 1980s, when people living in underserved, low-income communities of color began to recognize that they were disproportionately exposed to environmental health risks from sources such as hazardous waste dumps, power plants, and industrial facilities. The movement works to ensure that everyone has equal access to resources and that everyone is treated with respect and dignity when confronting environmental issues. In South Carolina, the Environmental Justice Movement consists of a variety of organizations and initiatives seeking to protect the rights of citizens. One of the most well-known organizations is the South Carolina Environmental Justice Network (SC-EJN), which works to raise awareness of environmental justice and supports South Carolinians in defending their right to a clean and healthy environment. SC-EJN focuses on building community power, amplifying the voices of those affected by environmental injustice, and educating the public. The organization also works to ensure that state and local governments put in place policies that protect vulnerable communities from environmental threats. The Environmental Justice Movement in South Carolina also works to increase access to green energy and clean transportation, create green jobs, and ensure the right to health and safety of all citizens. These efforts are ultimately intended to create greater access to clean air, water, and land in an effort to improve the health of all South Carolinians.
