Does my state have specific laws pertaining to horses?

Yes, Oklahoma does have laws that specifically pertain to horses. According to Oklahoma Statutes, Title 4, Chapter 28, all persons who own, board, or transport horses in the state must provide adequate care and humane treatment. This includes providing each horse with food, water, housing, and safe and sanitary living conditions. Neglect or abuse of horses is a punishable offense under Oklahoma law. In addition, the law states that it is illegal to tether horses in a manner that puts them at risk of injury or suffering. This includes but isn’t limited to tying horses to trees that can break, or attaching them to objects that can cause abrasions or rope burns. Furthermore, a Horse’s hooves must be maintained, meaning the nails must be trimmed every four to six weeks and the feet must be kept clean and free of any foreign object. In Oklahoma, it is illegal to brand or mark a horse without the consent of the owner. If a brand is registered, the owner must also maintain proper records and give the brand to the inspector upon request. It is also illegal to abandon a horse in Oklahoma. Any person found guilty of abandoning a horse may face fines, jail time, and seizure of the animal. Finally, it is illegal to race horses that are less than two years old in Oklahoma.
