What is a last will and testament?
A last will and testament is a legal document created by an individual to provide instructions on how their estate should be distributed after their death. This document is often referred to as a “will” or “testament”. In the state of Washington, a valid will must be signed by the maker (testator) in the presence of two witnesses who must also sign the will. The last will and testament contains the testator’s wishes in regards to the distribution of their estate and in whom it should pass to. It also includes any wishes regarding the care of any minor children and the appointment of guardians. Furthermore, the will can include specific directions regarding the wishes of the testator in regards to burial and funeral arrangements. A last will and testament is usually a very important document and it is important to make sure that it is valid. It is recommended that an estate planning attorney is consulted as they can ensure that the will is written properly and meets the legal requirements in the state of Washington. The will should always be kept in a secure place and the executor of the estate should be made aware of its whereabouts.
