What is a Living Will and how does it work?

A Living Will is a legal document that details your wishes about end-of-life medical care and treatments. In Arizona, a Living Will is a type of Advance Directive, which is a legal way to communicate your wishes regarding medical decisions for when you are no longer able to make them yourself. A Living Will will outline your preferences for treatments such as ventilators, CPR, antibiotics, artificial nutrition, and coma-inducing drugs. It also gives clear instructions about what should be done if you are terminally ill, in a permanent coma, or permanently unconscious. A Living Will can also state your wishes about organ donation and whether or not you prefer to be kept on life support. It can specify what your wishes are if you are unable to make decisions for yourself. In the case that you are in a medical crisis, or you cannot communicate your wishes, your Living Will takes precedence over decisions made by healthcare providers and family members. In Arizona, a Living Will is legally binding and must be signed by two witnesses who are not your family members. It can be created by an attorney, or you can complete your own form. Living Wills are important legal documents that help ensure that your wishes are respected if you are unable to express them yourself.
