How do I file for a guardianship?
In Texas, if you wish to become a guardian for a minor child, you must file a petition for guardianship with the court in the county in which the child lives. The court must approve the guardianship before it is official. You must fill out the appropriate court forms and provide information about yourself, the child, and any previous guardians. The court will also require two court-approved references who can vouch for your character and experience. In addition to the court forms, you must also provide other information such as evidence of the child’s parentage, birth certificate, insurance information, or educational records. You may also need to provide the court with medical records and documentation of any psychological and/or educational assessments for the child. If the court grants the guardianship, it will issue letters of guardianship that will appoint you as the legal guardian of the child. The court can also require you to provide a bond in order to protect the child’s interests. If you have any questions about the guardianship process, it is best to contact a qualified family law attorney in Texas who is experienced in guardianship law. An attorney can help guide you through the guardianship process and answer any questions you may have.
