What is a visitation schedule?

A visitation schedule is a plan that outlines when a non-custodial parent can visit a child in North Carolina. Visitation schedules are often court-ordered in family law cases involving divorce or legal separation. A visitation schedule typically outlines the dates and times when the non-custodial parent can visit with the child, as well as the duration of each visit. In some cases, the visitation schedule may also specify how the visits will take place (e.g., at the other parent’s house, in a public space, etc.). Depending on the circumstances, the visitation schedule may also include other details, such as who will pay for the costs associated with the visit, who will take care of transportation, and other special rules. Visitation schedules are intended to ensure that the child has regular contact with both parents, even if the parents no longer live together. The non-custodial parent is usually required to adhere to the terms of the visitation schedule. If either parent fails to follow the visitation schedule, they could be held in contempt of court, which could result in fines and/or other penalties.
